Two Quick Polls, Share Your Story with NBC Nightly News

Two Quick Polls, Share Your Story with NBC Nightly News

Share You Feedback, Share Your Stories
NYCON has recently launched two quick polls. Take a few minutes to share your feedback on the proposed increase in the minimum wage as well as giving your input on the ways your nonprofit might  utilize vendor relationships internationally in order to save money.

Poll #1:Where Do You Get Your Goods & Services?
NBC Nightly News has recently contacted NYCON inquiring about how New York nonprofits access the most affordable goods & services - and how they might utilize vendor relationships outside the United States. We are defining goods and services as utilities (electricity, water, natural gas, heating oil, phone service, etc.) as well as basic program or office supplies (i. e. paper, toner, or in the case of heath care, pharmaceuticals.)

Poll #2: Raise the Minimum Wage?
The Governor has recently proposed a plan to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $8.75 an hour. Do you agree with this proposal?

Some leaders optimistic about 2010

The Buffalo News reported that more local business leaders are optimistic heading into 2010 than they were last year, but the majority in the Buffalo Niagara region still expect things to stay gloomy or get worse, according to a survey released Wednesday.

A survey commissioned by First Niagara Bank and conducted by the Siena College Research Institute questioned business heads on their feelings about current economic conditions in their industries and in New York State, as well as their expectations for the year to come.

“We’re moving in the right direction, but we have a long way to go,” said Donald Levy, director at the Siena College Research Institute. “We are in the beginning of a slow, cautious recovery, but the general public will not feel the benefits of it immediately.”

In the poll’s overall business confidence index of 0 to 200, Buffalo Niagara scored a 79.6. That’s a 113-percent increase over last year’s score of 37.2.

When asked just about their future expectations, Buffalo Niagara scored an 87.4, increasing 88 percent over last year.

Of those surveyed, 25 percent of business leaders here said they believe business conditions in New York State will improve, more than twice as many as felt that way heading into 2009.

And while 46 percent expect conditions to get worse, that number is down from 75 percent last year. And another 28 percent expect conditions to remain the same in 2010. Read more here.

Community Health Foundation Implements Health Insurance Survey

The Buffalo News reported that when 1,700 Western New Yorkers were questioned by local health care reformers, their top concerns centered around how they are treated by medical professionals and how to get broader access to care.

In Washington, the top concern is how to pay for changes in a system that consumes an astounding 17 percent of gross domestic product—far more than any competitor nation—without covering everyone and with no commensurate benefit for the extra money.

That disconnect underlines the health care crisis of 2009, where patients worry about quality, politicians worry about costs, and conservatives try to use both concerns to kill reform—again.
That’s why it’s noteworthy that controlling costs was not among the top five concerns that came out of 114 community meetings to hear what Western New Yorkers want.

That may be because many on public programs or who have good employer coverage don’t feel costs very directly, said Ann F. Monroe, president of the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York, one of the organizers of this unprecedented project. Read more here.

Area small businesses back ‘public option’ in health insurance

The Buffalo News featured an article about an informal survey by an advocacy coalition that found small business owners in New York state overwhelmingly support the idea of a “public option” as part of a national health insurance reform effort, and are willing to pay to make “quality, affordable coverage” available.

The survey by New York Small Business United for Health Care reported that 73 percent of the business owners surveyed preferred a proposal with a public, government-run alternative to private insurance, versus 19 percent favoring an expansion of private market options.

The owners said they are willing to pay a portion of their payroll towards supporting such an option, with 64 percent saying they would pay at least 4 percent to 7 percent to “guarantee quality affordable coverage for themselves and employees.” Read more here.
